We’re all about facts here at The Mole, so let’s get right down to business:
- Willie Randolph was fired the day after Father’s Day.
- Three weeks later, the Metsies are 1.5 games out of first, and playing good baseball.
When the Metsies got Johan Santana last winter, they became the immediate favorites to win the National League. Unfortunately, Omar gave Willie Randolph another opportunity to prove that he’s a horrible manager who should never have been hired in the first place, and the Mets played crappy Willie-Ball until he was finally canned last month.
If you watch this team day in and day out, you can see a difference on the field since Willie was let go. Just the way they go about their business. That ‘06 swagger is back. Delgado is even contributing on offense.
Jerry Manuel came in and gave Castro a chance to get frequent at-bats, and it’s already paying dividends.
Manuel solidified roles in the bullpen; guys finally know when they’re gonna pitch, and when they can expect to chill out and relax. Willie had everyone in the ‘pen anxious, not knowing what was going to happen — now, they’re relaxed, and it’s showing on the field — Heilpimp is even getting outs now!
Manuel has this team focused late in games, scoring huge insurance runs.
Barring any serious injuries to Santana, Ollie, Big Pelf, Jose, or D-Wright, the Metsies will run away with this division, and when that happens, how can you not award Jerry Manuel the NL Manager of the year?
The Phillies pitching staff is an absolute joke, and we all know the Marlins will stumble in the second half. I’m actually more concerned about the Marlins than the Phillies, especially if Josh Johnson (starting tonight for the first time in more than a year after Tommy John surgery) can pimp it the rest of the way, and Ricky Nolasco can continue to dominate like he’s been doing.
For those of you who are still skeptical about the Metsies, here are some more facts:
- Oliver Perez has an ERA under 3 in his last 6 starts.
- Mike Pelfrey is unhittable (seriously)
- Johan’s still one of the best in the game, despite slightly diminished stuff from the Johan of old.
- Pedro’s throwing in the low-90s consistently and feeling good (don’t worry about the recent shellings, he’s still Pedro).
- Johnny Maine’s still wearing dresses and leaving games with cramps.
It’s kinda crazy to think about, but two of our biggest weaknesses right now are Pedro Martinez (our #5 starter) and Billy Wagner — two first-ballot HOFers.
The Metsies have 4 games remaining before the All-Star break — taking 3 of 4 would be huge, but regardless of what happens, the first half of the season HAS to be considered a success; the clubhouse cancer (Willie) is gone, Ollie’s throwing 97 mph gas, and Pelfrey recently established himself as a Major League pitcher.
Metsies’ fans have a lot to look forward to the second half of the season.
